Last week felt like a breath of fresh air in my little corner of southern Germany. After weeks of gray, cold, winter weather, we were given nearly a full week of blue sky and spring-like temperatures. The reviving effects of a bit of sunshine on mood and outlook are impressive, and it’s hard to beat the feeling of early spring, when it seems like everything is slowly coming back to life.
While not explicitly written about the spring season, similar themes of new beginnings and new life can be found throughout the song “Hallo Hallo” by German musician Berge. The song itself marked a new start for Berge, a band which until early 2023 was a duo known for heartfelt pop songs such as 2019’s “Für die Liebe”. With the September 2024 release of “Hallo Hallo”, band member Rocco Horn began a new chapter for Berge, this time as a solo act.
The music video’s vibrant coloring and energy remind me of that fresh, early spring feeling, and the text is also full of references to fresh starts and new growth.
Hallo Hallo, Hallo neues Leben
Hello hello, hello new life
Ich bin bereit wieder loszulegen
I'm ready to get going again
Hallo Freude, Hallo Euphorie
Hello joy, hello euphoria
Wie wunderschön, dass es euch gibt
How wonderful that you exist
Hallo Hallo, es geht endlich weiter
Hello hello, things are finally moving on
Ich blüh wieder auf, alles fällt mir leichter
I'm thriving again, everything is easier for me
Hallo Anfang, Hallo Rückenwind
Hello beginning, hello tailwind
Komm lass uns was neues beginnen
Let's start something new
Here are a few additional words from “Hallo Hallo” to add to your vocabulary list:
das Ende - the end
der Neuanfang - the new beginning
die Gewohnheit - the habit
der Wandel - the change
aufreißen - to tear open
rausschmeißen - to throw out
loslegen - to get started
die Freude - the joy
die Euphorie - the euphoria
weitergehen - to continue
aufblühen - to blossom / to thrive
aufbauen - to build up
Wishing you both Freude and Euphorie this week, along with some Sonnenschein to go with it!
Liebe Grüße und bis nächste Woche,
Jessica

Last week, I asked for input from German learners and educators about my idea to start creating German language learning materials to go along with the music featured on Sprachmelodie. Ganz vielen Dank to all who responded – I received some great feedback and plan to start working towards exciting updates in this direction over the next few weeks and months.
If you haven’t responded yet, I’d still love to hear from you!
