Wir drehen uns im Kreis
A new year and a fresh start 🎵
Na, seid ihr noch da? (Well, are you all still there?)
It’s been what feels like an Ewigkeit since I’ve sent out a German music recommendation along with thoughts about the German language or culture, and the start of 2026 feels like a great time to change that.
If you’re wondering who I am or why you’re receiving this email, allow me to reintroduce myself:
Hallo! My name is Jessica, and I’m an American thirty-something whose life took an unexpectedly adventurous turn when I met my German husband and we moved our life to Germany in 2019. Along the way, I discovered my love for the German language and a particular interest in German-language music.
I started Sprachmelodie in 2023 as a creative way to dive more deeply into German language and music while also encouraging other German language learners. Sprachmelodie has already featured over 50 different songs by more than 40 German artists, each one connected to one or more aspects of German language and culture.
Last spring, I shared that I would love to see Sprachmelodie eventually evolve into even more of a targeted language-learning resource for German educators and learners. While I still love this idea and hope to return to it in the future, at the moment I’d like to get back to what I’ve enjoyed (and missed) the most about Sprachmelodie – regularly sharing music I love, along with a few tidbits about German language and culture. I’m hoping to once again start sharing around once a week(ish), and then we’ll see where things go from there.
Also, habt ihr Bock? Seid ihr dabei?
Na dann, auf geht’s!
It feels appropriate to start my Neuanfang by resharing a song that I first featured in November 2024 – “Wir drehen uns im Kreis” by Lina Maly and Moritz Krämer. The song’s description of winter feels especially timely as my own town of Heidelberg lays under a soft blanket of freshly fallen snow, and the theme of changing seasons fits nicely with the start of a new year.
Schau hin, schau her
Look here, look there
Der Herbst ist vorbei, mein Herz
Autumn is over, my heart
Der Winter hat sich eingeschlichen
Winter has crept in
Und hat die Welt einfach weiß gestrichen
And has simply painted the world white
Die Erde war warm, die Wiesen waren grün
The earth was warm, the meadows were green
Jetzt schläft der ganze Wald
Now the whole forest is asleep
Und die Vögel singen im Süden
And the birds are singing in the south
Wir drehen uns im Kreis
We’re going around in circles
Das macht die Zeit
That’s what time does
Wir drehen uns im Kreis
We’re going around in circles
Von allein
On our own
You can check out the original song post here, which also includes a few vocabulary words from the song.
I wish you a wonderful beginning to 2026 – bis zum nächsten Mal!
Liebe Grüße,
Jessica

Good to have Sprachmelodie back! :)
Good to see you posting again! I started a series on the history of German music and it's influence in Britain last year. Always keen to hear about the music scene there and any recommendations
