One year ago this week, I launched a project I had been dreaming of and planning for nearly a full year beforehand – a blog where I could combine my interests in music, digital media, writing, and, of course, the German language.
Over the past year, Sprachmelodie has featured more than 40 German songs by 38 different artists, spanning 36 German language concepts and 16 musical genres. And I still feel like we’re noch am Anfang – just getting started!
It’s been fun to experiment with format, post frequency, and platform, and I’m happy to have landed here on Substack (after initially starting with a standalone website), which has streamlined my process quite a bit. I’ve also enjoyed getting to connect with many of you, from fellow expats and German language educators to German learners (and dabblers) of all backgrounds.
Whether you have been following Sprachmelodie for the past year or just signed up this past week, I am thrilled to have you along for the ride as we discover new music, improve our German grammar, and grow our vocabulary. I find that music has such an extraordinary way of making language concepts come alive while also providing illuminating insights into the culture from which it comes.
I’m excited to share more German music, language, and culture with you in the months to come, and am always happy to hear about your own favorite artists and songs, as well as any additional feedback you may have for me! I’m very much aware that music is a Geschmackssache (a matter of taste) and it’s easy to focus on my favorite artists, but I’m trying to move outside of my musical comfort zone and get to know an even broader range of talented German musicians.
This upcoming coming year, I also hope to start sharing more about my own language learning journey and experiences living in Germany, so stay tuned! In the meantime, check out Sprachmelodie’s archive, music index, and official Spotify playlist to discover more of the music that’s been featured in Sprachmelodie’s first year!
Auf das, was da noch kommt! (Here’s to what’s yet to come!)
Ganz lieben Dank fürs Lesen und Anhören,
Jessica
