Heute, morgen und übermorgen
Today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow – “Übermorgen” by Mark Forster
It’s no secret that relationships take work to maintain. Any long-term relationship, be it with a friend, family member, or romantic partner, experiences highs and lows over time and requires effort from both sides to continue. “Übermorgen” by Mark Forster describes such a relationship, as well as the commitment to stand by a partner through life’s ups and downs – today, tomorrow, and “the day after tomorrow”.
Mark Forster is easily one of Germany’s most recognizable pop stars, and also a regular coach on The Voice of Germany. I appreciate how many of his songs put a positive and encouraging spin on Alltagsthemen (everyday topics and experiences). An deiner Seite will ich bleiben
I want to stay at your side
Geh’ durch Feuer und alle Zweifel
Pass through fire and all doubts
Mit allen Träumen und all den Sorgen
With all the dreams and all the worries
Heute, morgen und übermorgen
Today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow
An deiner Seite will ich sein
I want to be at your side
Uns alle Fehler verzeihen
Forgive each other’s mistakes
Mit allen Träumen und all den Sorgen
With all the dreams and all the worries
Heute, morgen und übermorgen
Today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow
You may have already encountered the words in German for yesterday, today, and tomorrow – gestern, heute, and morgen. But German also goes beyond English in offering us additional adverbs of time to pinpoint specific days – with vorgestern (the day before yesterday), and übermorgen (the day after tomorrow).
Thanks to this expanded range of day-describing words, Mark Forster can sing about staying with someone someone heute, morgen, and übermorgen – somehow I have the feeling that a song in English about “today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow” wouldn’t have quite the same effect.
It’s worth noting that all of these words (vorgestern, gestern, heute, morgen, übermorgen) begin with lowercase letters when used as adverbs of time to describe a day.
